With each custom rom, kernel and theme that you attempt to flash onto your phone, there is always the danger of bricking it. A bricked phone technically means that it turns into a non-functional state. In such case, after powering on your phone after an unsuccesful flash, you get stuck in seeing either an infinite bootloop of your boot animation or just the Samsung Galaxy Young logo. This is what we call a soft brick. Unfortunately, the process in recovering a hard bricked Galaxy Young is not the same. A hard brick means that your phone will not power on regardless of any key combinations you try to press.

If you have flashed a custom rom for the first time and ended up bricking your phone, you can easily restore it back to its normal state thanks to tools such as Odin that can get you out of this mess. This post will show you how to do this in case you get stuck in this frustrating situation.

<h2>
Pre-requisites:</h2>
<ul>
<li>A working USB cable</li>
<li>Odin 3.07 - <a href="https://www.mediafire.com/?8hc7wusz75wm598" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Click here to download.</a></li>
<li>Samsung USB Drivers - A simple installation of the Samsung Kies software should take care of that. </li>
<li>Stock GT-S6310/S6312 firmware - Can be found at <a href="http://sammobile.com/firmwares/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://sammobile.com/firmwares/</a></li>
</ul>
<h2>
How to unroot/unbrick Galaxy Young (GT-S6310/GT-S6312):</h2>
<ol>

<li>Head into the SamMobile firmware portal as mentioned in the pre-requisites and register for an account. Then in the firmware search bar search for GT-S6310 or GT-S6312 (S6310 is the regular variant and the S6312 is the Duos variant).</li>

<li>If possible, download the firmware that is meant for your country. It's okay to download another country's firmware if there is none available for yours.</li>

<li>After the download is complete, extract the firmware zip file and you should get a .tar.md5 file and a .dll file.</li>

<li>Now extract the Odin 3.07 zip file that you have downloaded and run the Odin program. Also, do not enable/disable any of the options in Odin, especially not Re-partition! Leave them all as they are by default.</li>

<li>Power off your Galaxy Young</li>

<li>While the phone is powered off, begin holding the Volume down + Home + Power buttons together to boot into Download mode. Once you have booted into Download mode, press the Volume up button to have it say "Downloading..." on your phone's screen.</li>

<li>Now connect it to your computer and check the Odin program to see if it will recognize it in one of the ID:COM boxes. If it doesn't, you need to try and re-install the Samsung USB Drivers.</li>

<li>Once your phone is connected and Odin recognizes it, click on the PDA button and choose the .tar.md5 that you got when you extracted the firmware zip file.</li>

<li>Now click on Start and wait for the process to complete.</li>

<li>After it is done, your phone should automatically reboot and start up normally. In case you are still stuck on a bootloop, take off the battery, place it back in and hold the Volume up + Home + Power buttons together to boot into Recovery mode and perform a data wipe. </li>

How to odex back your rom on Samsung Galaxy Y

Are you done modding that custom rom to your desires and want to perform the final touches on it such as speeding it up? Now you can easily do that thanks to a very simple odexer script developed by <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4944549">MatrixDJ96</a> from xda-developers forums.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6wVpnW-rAKCLiNt1ERQjGYNW7wqZ8juBFg63h8A7AU68sWNsJ8Sbp0vRnUPzRHjiUrTJZVPFqN1Ec1VFx_lrAcLIXUTKjQSZbRNzqdpkWTXhm0gX766ORYGvRbWB91kHhDytiOJkLAGh8/s1600/SAM_0926-blog.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6wVpnW-rAKCLiNt1ERQjGYNW7wqZ8juBFg63h8A7AU68sWNsJ8Sbp0vRnUPzRHjiUrTJZVPFqN1Ec1VFx_lrAcLIXUTKjQSZbRNzqdpkWTXhm0gX766ORYGvRbWB91kHhDytiOJkLAGh8/s640/SAM_0926-blog.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
This procedure is a must if you plan on speeding up your phone, such as gaining a faster boot process, gaining a bit more free space and most importantly, removing some lag while using the system apps.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil7uq-CwFfe6pjTFc8kEVXrgp2VLZFxx-rcjX265jPDM6EO0S_TlOD6zNS_5TRSA4hSkhBydj0JK5sJ37ysSdBqp-wevbeyCvDtVUwZ8yvJx-0nriqEnffAunvfnkzXrxTCGWFIviMaICo/s1600/SC20131115-141532.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil7uq-CwFfe6pjTFc8kEVXrgp2VLZFxx-rcjX265jPDM6EO0S_TlOD6zNS_5TRSA4hSkhBydj0JK5sJ37ysSdBqp-wevbeyCvDtVUwZ8yvJx-0nriqEnffAunvfnkzXrxTCGWFIviMaICo/s1600/SC20131115-141532.png" /></a></div>

<h2>
Basic explanation:</h2>
Odexing your rom has it's positive and negative sides. Odex files are actually collections of parts of an application that are optimized before booting. Doing so speeds up the boot process, as it preloads part of an application which is a good thing, but the bad thing is that it makes it more difficult to modify a system apk like you would do it on a deodexed rom. Best is to modify the custom rom to your needs and when you feel there is no work at all left to do, odex it.

<h2>
Instructions:</h2>
<ol>
<li>Download the zip file to your sdcard</li>
<li>Boot into CWM Recovery and flash it</li>
<li>Reboot your phone</li>
<li>Now open up the Terminal Emulator app which should be in your app drawer</li>
<li>Type in su - it will then give you a popup to grant it superuser access, allow it.</li>
<li>Now type in dexo -h which should display a list of commands</li>
<li>It is recommended you just type in dexo -all which odexes your rom completely (WARNING: Requires free space in system partition, mostly recommended on a rom that has most bloatware removed!)</li>
<li>After the process is done, you may find your statusbar missing and whatnot, just reboot your phone and everything should be back to normal, oh, and your rom should be odexed.</li>
</ol>

Xposed Framework on Samsung Galaxy Y GT-S5360

A while ago, Xposed Framework was back ported to Gingerbread and since the Galaxy Y is running GB and sadly always will be, it's on the list of supported devices.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibQBvHABLsR93rvX62oms9mua3HeQikhLrx_8S5VYwi-KMEYFEidUsy1ZciBum6RqhLXSUtkNkWNwcV3lCUnFDOhj3O30yM9Qhkr2kihGuFdmg1EsrmVuMJGIFNy494M2Q-YsmkTui_YbG/s1600/xposed_framework_android1-660x495.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibQBvHABLsR93rvX62oms9mua3HeQikhLrx_8S5VYwi-KMEYFEidUsy1ZciBum6RqhLXSUtkNkWNwcV3lCUnFDOhj3O30yM9Qhkr2kihGuFdmg1EsrmVuMJGIFNy494M2Q-YsmkTui_YbG/s640/xposed_framework_android1-660x495.png" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image credits: <a href="http://www.elandroidelibre.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.elandroidelibre.com/</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
For those of you who are not aware of what this Xposed Framework represents, in a few words it basically allows you to modify your system without the need of decompiling the apk files and then pushing them to your system. It saves tons of time for modifications to the UI such as changing text color, background, images and whatnot whether your rom is deodexed or odexed. Sadly, those exact advantages are missing for the Galaxy Y as for now there is no such module available.

I decided to give it a shot and guess what, it installs without any problems! Huge thanks to xda member <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=3818339">liudongmiao</a> for porting this to Gingerbread and of course even bigger thanks to xda member <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4419114" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">rovo89</a> for making all of this possible.

As I mentioned above, there are no modules available for now that help modify Gingerbread TouchWiz roms such as the the module called Wanam Xposed which is made for users to modify their Jelly Bean based TouchWiz roms.

We do still get some goodies such as the Play Store fixer, the XPrivacy and App Settings. All of which I go into detail about in the video you will find in this post.

<h2>
Downloads:</h2>
Xposed Installer: <a href="http://dl.xposed.info/latest.apk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Click here.</a>
Play Store fixer (module): <a href="https://www.mediafire.com/?3y0ud4can3mx9ag" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Click here.</a>
XPrivacy (module): <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/b6g7gr6q88m4cws/biz.bokhorst.xprivacy_v283_b6d0a9.apk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Click here.</a>
App Settings (module): <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/b6g7gr6q88m4cws/biz.bokhorst.xprivacy_v283_b6d0a9.apk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Click here.</a>

I would say the most useful module for now is the App Settings one because it gives you the ability to change an app's DPI, force a screen orientation, force it to not be fullscreen or force it to be fullscreen, etc.

If you have no idea how to install and setup all of this to work, you may watch this video below:
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/YsmQsP-lDWU" width="640"></iframe>

These are the only known working modules for now, if you happen to stumble upon some neat ones that work in the future, don't hestitate to leave a comment!

A member from xda-developers forums - <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=5355336">thewarlord</a> has come up with this idea to make a CWM flashable zip file that gets the job done without all of that hassle on rooting your phone, going through your system partition and modifying a file, and rebooting the phone on top of that. Quite clever.

This little mod replaces your default qwerty.kl file with one that has the changes done into it, and this can be considered universal (should work on any rom) as this file shouldn't really have much difference on various 2.3.6 builds.

<li>Now locate the softviberatecwm.zip file and select it</li>
<li>Choose Yes when asked to confirm</li>
<li>Wait a few seconds and after it says "install from sdcard complete"</li>
<li>Press the back button to go to the main menu and select "reboot system now"</li>
<li>Enjoy your vibrating soft keys</li>

Have you ever wanted to use air gestures similar to the ones that the flagship phone - Galaxy S4 does? Well your dream has partially come true as xda-developers member <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2945040" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">forgin</a> has developed this neat app that simulates the S4 air gestures. The best part about this is that it's free and it requires Android 2.2 and above.

The app uses the proximity sensor that the Galaxy Y has on the front, so now you won't only use the proximity sensor for shutting off the screen while making calls, but for a lot more things. Please note that the video you will watch below does not show all of the features the app offers, explore the rest by your own.

<h2>
Main features: </h2>
<ul>
<li>Set apps to open with all the available gestures.</li>
<li>Silence alarm.</li>
<li>Silence incoming call.</li>
<li>Switch betwen recent apps (like back and forward behaviour)</li>
<li>Fast go to home screen</li>
<li>QuickGlance like Galaxy S4 has!!!</li>
<li>Control your music player (next/previous/pause/resume) even with screen off!!!</li>
<li>Shake phone during a call to activate/deactivate speakerphone.</li>
<li>Answer incoming call, just put your phone near to your ear (its like Hover Hold)</li>
<li>Lock/Unlock screen with hand slides!</li>
</ul>

<h2>
For rooted users:</h2>
<ul>
<li>Slide betwen your photos in your image gallery (1 slide->next, 2 slides->previous)</li>
<li>Scroll up and down in your browser (1 slide->down, 2 slides->up. Not all browser are supported).</li>
</ul>

Installing the app is pretty simple. Download either the APK from the xda-developers forum attachment or purchase the app from the Play Store. Then after you install the app, it will give you a screen where you need to enable it as a device administrator, so don't worry, just enable it and you are done.

There are times your Galaxy Y may start causing you problems such
as hangs at certain points, apps force-closing, not allowing you to move
 forward and so on after installing a faulty app.
If you didn't know, Android can also be booted into
Safe Mode just like how you boot your Windows PC and the main point of
it is of course for troubleshooting issues. Thanks to Safe Mode, you
will be able to uninstall unresponsive apps and fix your phone.

Many people keep asking what is better to use, a stock rom or a custom rom?

This short post is going to give some information to the newbies out there who are in this dilemma about what is better for the Galaxy Y, etc. We'll also cover the topic of overclocking and why it is bad.

Stock or Custom?
Now this one will kind of include many of my personal opinions on what I believe is better.

We all know the problems sometimes with custom roms that include custom kernels. I'm pretty sure many of you have experienced seeing your phone reboot all of a sudden for an unknown reason or all of a sudden some system apps would begin force closing.

Many people ask me all the time what I'm using, mostly when I was still with the AOSP + JB look. I personally think that using a stock rom tweaked to your taste (if you are a bit advanced of course) is best.
Now if you are like me, not the kind of guy that's much of a fan of all the JellyBean-like looks on 90% of custom ROMs but are just interested in the improved performance and smoothness not caring at all for the looks, you would want to create your own personal "custom" rom from the beginning.

In some roms (no offense to some people), there are problems, some just have too many tweaks/scripts, badly resized/rendered PNG images of the icons, let's not talk about the statusbar icons, and a few more things.
Now that is somewhat the main reason why I stay away from custom roms, those graphics such as the ICS-like statusbars don't seem to look very well on this small, pixelated screen. The default Samsung stock ones are just perfect, or the AOSP statusbar icons for instance.

I could go on, and on, but we'll end it here. My advice:
Get yourself a pure, clean stock rom (deodex it or don't, we'll cover this up in the next topic below), install ONLY the system apps and tweaks that you NEED, always make backups before installing any scripts and test the changes for a day or two, if you start to experience problems, restore your nandroid backup while your phone was still ok. Along with that I'd recommend to start off with a nice custom kernel first, there are plenty that you can find here in the kernels category, all of them are very well developed.
There are many posts here with tweaks and of course with instructions covering on how to set them up and you know with trying, you gain experience and with that experience you will become more and more knowledgable on this stuff and eventually you won't need anyone's help but you will be modding your Samsung Galaxy Y like a boss.

Should I deodex my rom or not?
Now deodexing explained in short, no smartass way, etc, is basically like another type of "rooting" your phone but it opens up access to theming your phone by modifying any system app you choose.
If you've browsed your system directory while being on a pure stock rom, you may have noticed .odex files along with the system .apk files.
There are cons and pros on this. You see, when you deodex your rom, it is reported that your internal memory gets a bit lower and your Galaxy Y boots slower, but you are able to theme it (replace system apps with customized ones).
When you have not deodexed it, you save your internal memory, have your Galaxy Y booting up faster, but you are stuck with your stock system apps.
For those of you wondering, modifying your statusbar icons and such does not require you to have a deodexed rom.
My advice:
If you don't care about the looks of your Galaxy Y and are fine to just use a custom launcher then do not deodex it! It'll be just a waste.

Overclocking: Should I do it or not?
Now first of all, I've personally never bothered trying to overclock my phone but there are methods posted out there including on the blog here by another author. I'm not sure if what some people are saying is true, that there is no actualy overclocking available for now and that it's just a visual effect, but here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
Your phone is acting faster
This unlocks a whole new gaming world for you, some apps run more efficently than before

Cons:
Battery will overheat more, possible life decrease
Bad for the Galaxy Y's CPU

My advice:
You could try it if you like, have fun for a while but if you notice more heat than before or any other problems, immediatelly revert back to the old frequencies and just live with what you paid the manufacturer for.

So that covers a few of the more "complicated" questions for a few people, this post still may need some improvements and once I get more ideas to add to it, I will modify it. For now, just enjoy what is posted.

How to use Samsung Galaxy Y as an USB Webcam

The Samsung Galaxy Y is incapable of doing video calls on Skype and other IM clients except the VTalk app which is proven to work with it. There are times you need a webcam to have contact with a distant relative, to see each other live but you don't have a webcam and there is no need to buy one if you're video chatting once a year. For that, you can use your Samsung Galaxy Y as a webcam using an Android app and by installing a PC client on your computer.
The method which we are going to use is establishing the connection with the USB cable, no wireless methods because not everyone has a powerful mobile network or a router at home. Now I am going to show you the instructions on how to set it up. Before we begin, let's make sure that we have everything downloaded to our phone and computer and begin the installation.
You would need:
<ul>
<li>USB Webcam.apk - <a href="https://www.cubby.com/pl/usb+webcam-www.galaxyyarchive.info.apk/_1256d2b2475c4668bb89334215f45cd3" target="_blank">Click here to download.</a></li>
<li>PC Client - <a href="https://www.cubby.com/pl/usbwebcam_for_android_x86_win_r0040.exe/_1a8362111a0a48eaad5cd962036483db" target="_blank">Click here to download.</a></li>
</ul>
Step 1 - Preparation:
Before everything, be sure to have USB debugging enabled on your phone. You can do that by going to Settings -> Applications -> Development - tick the box next to where it says USB debugging.
Now download the USB Webcam apk to your phone's sdcard and download the PC client to your computer.

Step 2 - Setting up:
Install the apk on your phone and install the PC client on your computer.
You may or may not have received a shortcut on your Desktop so if you haven't, you can find the Windows app installed at:
<ul>
<li>For Windows Vista/7: C:\Program Files (x86)\USBWebcam</li>
<li>For Windows XP: C:\Program Files\USBWebcam</li>
</ul>
In that folder you should see a batch file named "usbwebcam".
Now that you have everything installed you are ready to try out your new webcam.

Step 3 - Running the webcam:
Now connect your Galaxy Y to your computer with the USB cable, then on your computer go to the folder where the USB Webcam program got installed and run the batch file.You should see the following text:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4DPOJUyiQVa-PIWJu46CXCwQpMv3ORXXxQcGQ8qyQ1tMOq2kDVByHprwL0OtPGPxF4mBMSEs9VFnp0U2JCKFsaXeD3xCN3hsS2ntPdaSdgnZM_qjSRHtNGhcgWeMfCQGUJGOLZ_A3pbxT/s1600/cmd.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="161" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4DPOJUyiQVa-PIWJu46CXCwQpMv3ORXXxQcGQ8qyQ1tMOq2kDVByHprwL0OtPGPxF4mBMSEs9VFnp0U2JCKFsaXeD3xCN3hsS2ntPdaSdgnZM_qjSRHtNGhcgWeMfCQGUJGOLZ_A3pbxT/s320/cmd.png" width="320" /></a></div>
Now on your phone run the USB Webcam app and you should have a preview of the camera:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh2dlsVIbQE-Wy8osufoWTvhXBS4LZz6nrO3RB2en4G5X3xigECVGFJSaP4lSPXZDk0SeiFFn_syhEXwii4tn0PEyOL5UzCbvdmRDLtDKG1IZD7jWBV4Nhb_Ow9vqoIbkNGvP0opu_83St/s1600/SC20130403-224520.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh2dlsVIbQE-Wy8osufoWTvhXBS4LZz6nrO3RB2en4G5X3xigECVGFJSaP4lSPXZDk0SeiFFn_syhEXwii4tn0PEyOL5UzCbvdmRDLtDKG1IZD7jWBV4Nhb_Ow9vqoIbkNGvP0opu_83St/s1600/SC20130403-224520.png" /></a></div>
That's about it, try out your new webcam on Skype or any other IM client. Also please note that the rotation of the camera preview on your phone may look different than in the computer, you may need to position your Galaxy Y with the bottom being on the left side and the speaker/logo on the right side to get a proper view.

ROM<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
In simple words, a ROM
is the basic Operating System ( It may vary as Gingerbread, Honeycomb
or Jellybean) on which your mobile runs. Just like Windows 8 or Mac on your
computers.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 14.25pt; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
There are 2 types of
ROMs:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 14.25pt; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
1.Stock ROM<o:p></o:p></div>

2.Custom ROM<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
The
basic operating system your phone works when you buy them is known as the STOCK ROM. It has all basic needs & it is secured OS, as it is not
rooted at the beginning. It is the safest OS you can have<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
On the other hand, we
have the most Interesting, mind-blowing and Rocking ROM, known as CUSTOM ROMs.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
-
Interesting because we have a wide range of   User Interfaces ( UI )
which we can choose based on our taste and preferences <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
- Mind-blowing because
you get to explore things, which you had never thought your mobile could do.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
- Rocking because,
words cannot explain ;) Feel it yourself.<o:p></o:p></div>
