So a few weeks ago I recommended a buddy of mine on the internet to buy the Samsung Galaxy Y if he is looking for a low-budget decent Android phone. He loved it after he bought it but the phone came with an awful battery life. He could barely play games for a long time even the simplest ones would kill his battery fast.
So I decided to help him out with calibrating his battery to have a longer battery life by instructing him with the following instructions that you can find almost in every Android community on the net.
Instructions:
Before everything else, be sure to have CWM Recovery so that you can boot it later. Click here to download CWM.zip
- To begin, you need to fully drain your battery. Play some games, music or videos.
- Leave your battery to cool down for 2-4 minutes.
- Turn on your SGY to remove residual charge (the phone should only boot halfway).
- After it shuts down again, remove the battery once more and leave it to cool down for 2-3 minutes.
- Insert back your battery and plug in the charger but do not turn on the phone, leave it charging in OFF mode.
- After it is charged to 100% boot into your Stock Recovery by holding the Power+Home+Volume up buttons. Then apply update from SD card and select the CWM.zip to boot into CWM Recovery.
- Choose the advance option.
- Choose "Wipe battery stats".
- Press back button to go back and then choose Reboot.
- Wait unttil your phone's battery reaches 100% charge and after that disconnect the charger.
- Try out your calibrated battery, it should last longer.
It worked for him. Personally I have never had a battery problem for now so I did not test these instructions myself but on my friend and they worked. Now I'm going to give you guys a few tips on how to keep your battery life to it's longest with no tweaks needed.
1. Android's built-in battery usage screen and running applications:
Always check the Battery Usage screen to see if there are any apps that are draining your battery. You can access this screen by going to Settings -> Applications -> Battery use:
If you spot an application that uses way to much % and you don't need it running be sure to kill it!
Another way to check for useless apps running in the background is to go Settings -> Applications -> Running services:
If you see something in there that you do not need but is running, kill it by tapping on it and then by pressing on the Stop button.
2. Screen brightness:
To adjust your screen brigthness, go to Settings -> Display -> Brightness.
I recommend you keep the level to this one:
I've been using this ever since I got my SGY and to be honest, there is not much difference between this and the max one. The only pros that the max level gives you is for daylight, when you are outside at the sun because it is hard to see at such low level, but at night this is perfect and even when you are at home in your room. It consumes less battery and is greatly visible.
3. Disable Wi-Fi if not in use.
Disable your Wi-Fi connection if you are not going to use it. If you are in a bus or simply walking past different buildings and homes with Wi-Fi signals, your phone constantly is trying to scan for new connections and sometimes going to sleep which again uses your battery for the actions. I recommend you only turn on your Wi-Fi connection when you are going to use it. It takes less than 10 seconds to turn it on/off by simply dragging down the status bar and pressing the Wi-Fi button.
4. Disable Bluetooth if not in use.
Disable your Bluetooth if you aren't going to use it. Again, you can do that by simply dragging the statusbar at the top and then pressing on the Bluetooth button to turn it off.
5. Disable GPS and Location.
Now this one is a pretty risky move. By turning off this feature you are risking of losing your phone permanently if you happen to forget it somewhere or drop it, there will be no way to locate it if you do not have any navigation running. I personally have have it turned off ever since I bought my SGY. You just need to be very careful and keep an eye on your SGY regularly if it is in your pocket while you are doing activities outside. You can turn it off by simply going to Settings -> Location and security:
6. Live Wallpapers
Some live wallpapers can be a major drain to your battery. They sure do look beautiful and make your screen pretty but if you would like to save battery, I recommend you switch to a normal wallpaper, it is your choice.
7. Toggle Flight mode
If you are not expecting to get any calls or messages by someone, another good tip would be to have Flight mode toggled on which will completely stop any signals.
8. Disable Sync settings
Automatic syncing can drain some battery aswell. You can do this by going to Settings -> Accounts and sync settings. Turn off Background data:
When you access Google Play it will ask you to enable it. Do so when you need to download something from there.
Well that's about it, these tips will help you save some battery life and last longer. I spent quite a lot of time writing this so if you are going to copy please atleast provide a link to this post as a source.
Hope this post was of help.
